Sri Lanka ICMC deplores death of Action Against Hunger aid workers
Sri Lanka
GENEVA 8 August 2006 (ICMC) — ICMC expresses its condolences and its deepest sympathy to the families and to Action Against Hunger of the 17 aid workers found dead in the Sri Lankan town of Muttur while carrying out humanitarian aid work. As an international humanitarian organisation with staff working abroad, ICMC fully deplores these killings of men and women who come as relief workers to alleviate the suffering of others. "Violence is never a solution, violence against humanitarian actors is further destroying hope and chances for a better future marked by dialogue and reconciliation," commented Johan Ketelers, the ICMC Secretary General. We wish that an independent investigation be carried out. We believe in the importance, the value and the imperative necessity of humanitarian relief work in today's world. We therefore unequivocally condemn those who undermine the right for international relief organizations to work in peace and without fear.
